Rare and Threatened species in the Garden
Amongst the 258 planted taxa within the Garden, we have more than 30 rare or threatened species within the Garden boundary. Click here to see the list of rare or threatened species. As part of our winter guided walks program, we take a walk around some of our rare and threatened plant collection. Check the events calendar to see when these walks are run, or click on Rare and Threatened Plant Walk to download a PDF version of the walk.

Eight species grown in the Garden are listed as vulnerable species under the threatened species schedules of the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The NT Parks and Wildlife Service have written factsheets for these nationally listed threatened species: Palm Valley palm (Livistona mariae subsp. mariae); MacDonnell Ranges cycad (Macrozamia macdonnellii); Tjilpi wattle (Acacia latzii); waddywood (Acacia peuce); Undoolya wattle (Acacia undoolyana); Rainbow Valley fuchsia bush (Eremophila prostrata); glory-of-the-centre (Ricinocarpos gloriae-medii) and giant sweet potato (Ipomoea polpha subsp. latzii ).

We have over 15 Tjilpi wattles (Acacia latzii), a nationally listed threatened wattle, growing in the Garden Sturt desert pea (Swainsona formosa) is listed as a rare species in the southern Northern Territory, but grows relatively well in cultivation at Olive Pink Botanic Garden

By cultivating these threatened species in the Garden more is being learned about the growth characteristics and seed biology of these species, and the plants provide a valuable seed resource for propagating specimens for home gardens and for parks around Alice Springs.

In the list of rare and threatened species the following conservation codes are used to describe the geographic range, rarity and reservation status of each species.
Conservation Code Legend:
1: type collection only;
2: range of less than 100km; 3: range of greater than 100km;
E or e: Endangered nationally or in southern NT; V or v: Vulnerable nationally or in southern NT; R or r: Rare nationally or in southern NT;
C: conserved; a: adequately reserved; i: inadequately reserved; -: unknown population size within a reserve.
