Rare and Threatened species in the Garden Eight species grown in the Garden are listed as vulnerable species under the threatened species schedules of the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The NT Parks and Wildlife Service have written factsheets for these nationally listed threatened species: Palm Valley palm (Livistona mariae subsp. mariae); MacDonnell Ranges cycad (Macrozamia macdonnellii); Tjilpi wattle (Acacia latzii); waddywood (Acacia peuce); Undoolya wattle (Acacia undoolyana); Rainbow Valley fuchsia bush (Eremophila prostrata); glory-of-the-centre (Ricinocarpos gloriae-medii) and giant sweet potato (Ipomoea polpha subsp. latzii ).
By cultivating these threatened species in the Garden more is being learned about the growth characteristics and seed biology of these species, and the plants provide a valuable seed resource for propagating specimens for home gardens and for parks around Alice Springs. In the list of rare and threatened species the following conservation codes are used to describe the geographic range, rarity and reservation status of each species. |
